New Page : Hunter Valley Accommodation

Regular readers of our blog will be aware of the excellent search engine results we have achieved for our Hunter Valley Vineyards website. In only a few months since its launch, the website has become one of the highest ranking sites for Hunter Valley Wine Country on the Internet.

We have recently added a new page to the website at Hunter Valley accommodation.

Hunter Valley - First Page on Google

The roller coaster ride continues ...

Fresh from our dissappointment of appearing then dissappearing from Microsoft's Live Search results we are now able to confirm that our Hunter Valley Vineyards website is currently placed on the first page of results for our primary keyword target 'Hunter Valley Vineyards' on Google.

Launched on the 1st July, the website has taken only 31 days to reach the first page of Google for our key word phrase!

At this stage, only our index page has been 'ranked' and eagerly wait for the rest of the website results to come online. Of course, we'll keep you updated here of further developments.

Roller Coaster Ride for Hunter Valley Website

What a difference a day makes! Within three weeks of launching our new Hunter Valley Vineyards project the site was indexed by major search engines but it isn't all smooth sailing for Wine Country's newest site as we explain below.

The first search engine to list the website was a relatively unknown search engine known as Anoox closely followed by Jayde. Initial rankings on these engines were extremely encouraging and we were eagerly awaiting our rankings to appear for major search engines such as Microsoft Live, Google and Yahoo.

Although the major engines had indexed the website, we knew that it would take considerably longer to be formally 'ranked' by the search engines, effectively placing the website within search engine results. Our experience with Central Coast Australia showed that Microsoft Live would be the first to rank (typically around 5 weeks from submission) but on Saturday night 25th July our rankings came online for the first time.

Friends and family were the first to hear of the news as shouts of elation (and a little yahoo-ing) came from the study at the other end of the house, effectively interupting the late night game of Pictionary Charades in progress. The results were fantastic with the website effectively winning the rankings for our key term "Hunter Valley Vineyards" and many of our secondary targets including "Hunter Valley Bed and Breakfast" and "Hunter Valley Resorts".

As a result, this week we spread the good news to the wine country community mailing out to local tourism operators within the region and advising our success.

Unfortunately however, by the next afternoon all our results had vanished!

What appears to have happened is that we are experiencing what used to be referred to as 'the Google Dance' where our website has been updated on some Microsoft Live servers but not on others. We're confident however that our initial rankings will be online again soon and we'll continue to monitor the website over the next week and provide updates here as they come to hand.

Hunter Valley Vineyards Go Online

On Saturday 30th June, our newest project the Hunter Valley Vineyards tourism directory offically went online and was submitted to all the major search engines. The website features Hunter Valley wineries, accommodation, restaurants, cafes, attractions and things to do. Having lived and worked in the Hunter Valley tourism region for over thirty years, I'm accutely aware of the difficulties experienced by small to medium sized wineries and boutique accommodation providers in marketing themselves against large competitors and I'm extremely confident our new wine country directory will help to level the playing field. While it's been a long time in the making, we believe the wait will prove worthwhile as much of this time was spent perfecting our search engine strategies for the wine country tourism portal. If successful, we expect to roll out the new web format to our other tourism projects including Central Coast Australia within months.

Central Coast Australia - #1 for Microsoft

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Microsoft search engine LIVE became the first of the major search engine to rank Central Coast Australia and the results are something to behold. Keeping in mind that the web site is only 5 weeks old, the site posted some impressive opening rankings for key terms including 'central coast australia', 'central coast restaurants', 'central coast accommodation' and more.

In Australia Microsoft LIVE forms part of the hugely popular NineMsn group including web sites such as GetAway, 60 Minutes, A Current Affair, Today.

The NineMSN network is Australia's leading publisher with 7.97 million unique visitors each month from home/work — that's 40 percent of the total Australian population. In fact the NineMSN network is the market leader by a considerable margin.

What does this all mean? Well if you operate a tourism business on the Central Coast of Australia it may be time to visit www.centralcoast.com.au or send us an email to make sure your listed on the directory.

Web Site Statistics - Hit's versus Visitors

100,000 Hits? 500,000 Hits? While they look impressive, don't be confused into thinking big numbers like 100,000 hits means a web site is drawing thousands of visitors it's simply not the case.

The number of hits a web site receives relates to the number of files or images downloaded from a web site not the number of visitors.

As an example, let's say that your web site is designed using 100 small images on each page and you also use a couple of scripts to gather information and ensure the site run properly. In this scenario, if 1 person visted your index page(and nothing else) this would equal around 110 hits. If you had more images, scripts or files on that page then the number of hits would be higher again and so on.

Reporting hits is an all to common marketing strategy designed to confuse small business owners into thinking either their web site is working or, that they should advertise on a particular online directory. Webmasters using this strategy may design the particular site with hundreds of tiny, 'invisable' images to ensure the hits will look impressive, then sit at their computer hitting refresh or reload to drive the numbers up.

The most common and most accurate way of tracking (and reporting) web site traffic is by unique visitors or unique daily visitors. Depeneding on the statistical software used, the webmaster may also be able to screen out search engine spiders to provide an even more accurate number.

If someone has suggested to you that you pay them money to advertise on their web site, be sure to ask for the number of unique visitors the site attracts every month, before reaching for your cheque book.

The Sport of Search-Engine-Optimisation

For those of you who aren't clients as yet, search engine optimisation is one of the many services we offer. Recently we launched our new Central Coast Australia project which has not yet appeared on Google. Naturally, this has prompted a number of clients to ask when we will appear.

To be honest, search engine optimisation isn't a science it's a sport. In saying this I mean that there is no one answer as to how to make your site rank well other than to apply the key rules and make sure you don't do anything to upset the major search engines. The first step for any search engine strategy is to be indexed, after which you can then start to make your way up the rankings.

Essentially, this is what we're currently seeing with the Central Coast project. As the site is only two weeks old, Google has not yet visited the new web site and uploaded it to the search engine's index. We expect Google will revisit the web site sometime during the first week of March resulting in Central Coast Australia appearing in the Google search results soon after.

Once in Google, the web site should then start to climb up the Google rankings where we expect it will finish in the top couple of results for our key terms. If you are considering taking an advanced listing on the directory, please remember that we operate on a first in best dressed basis.
